Holidays in Baden near Vienna
Just a quick walk through the town is enough to show that Baden exudes its own wholly fascinating romanticism.

The fine-looking houses with their marvellous facades, the splendid Schauspielhaus, the evening spectacle of the palace-like casino lit up in blue and orange, the swimming pools of days gone by now converted into bars with many young people, art galleries and restaurants – as a visitor you can feel quickly at home ... The wine scene is a good opportunity to get to know the people from Baden. At the ‘Märzweiler’, for example, we found the original Kottertür of the Baden prison, in front of which, the ‘frog’ from Strauss’ ‘Fledermaus’, not averse to the odd drink, performed his service. And another wine experience is the Hauer Vinothek. Hauers – the name given to wine-growers in Baden – have collaborated and set up their own presentation, tasting and sales rooms for their wines in the city centre. If you’re lucky, you can also take in the ‘Singing Hauers’ – a twelve-man strong choir of wine-growers.
Baden’s beach, just a minute’s walk from the ‘Schlosshotel Oth’, is a peculiarity to be found nowhere else in the world. In the previous century, the Emperor’s family like to bath in Grado on the upper Adriatic coast. Then in 1926, the people of Baden built a copy of the beach in their own town. Thousands of square meters’ area of water, a beach of fine Adriatic sand, bathing lawns and a main building in the style of art nouveau with changing cabins – a brief description of a world wonder you’d never hope to find in a land-locked country.
