The land of fortresses and castles
In Kärnten, nature and culture combine into a synergy of arts. On some of the state’s most beautiful locations with the best views of the mountains and the lakes, you’ll certainly find a fortress, a castle or at least what remains of one.
Some of this time-honoured masonry is open for posterity; others are in private ownership and only leave you to guess from a distance what is hidden within their walls. In any case, the stone witnesses of time have their own distinctive stories to tell.
Culture in Kärnten – Wörthersee Festival
Since 1999, the floating lake stage has provided a spectacular highlight in the picturesque Ostbucht, the east bay, of Klagenfurt – in a cultural programme already filled with top-class performances. A transparent roof allows visitors a view of the splendid backdrop of the evening – and later night – lit lake. A truly unique open-air experience! In addition, it is not only the stage which the organisers have entrusted to the waters of the lake, even the audience is sitting directly on the water – so-to-speak – but dry. The rows of seats, which rise toward the back, offer seating for 2,014 guests. At 40 metres wide and 20 metres deep, the stage provides enough space for all types of productions. What’s more, productions work with the best coordinated tone and light systems.
